Thanks for visiting. Over the next few posts, I’ll take the reader through my writing journey and how I created the novel from early drafts to now. This book actually has its origins when I was in Grade 7 and my final writing assignment of the year in my English class was to write a short story. My teacher said it could be anything we wanted to write about. I wanted to write a gripping crime story set in Hawaii. Over a two or three week period, I wrote an 11-page story to the best of my 12-year old self’s ability. Decades later, my wife Cara found a copy of my Grade 7 story in a drawer and really liked it. “If you wrote this when you were twelve, imagine what you could write now?” she said.

That eleven page draft was the springboard to a new story about a character named Devon who heads to Hawaii for a fresh start after being laid off from his software development job. Ten pages became fifty pages, and then fifty pages became 100 pages and on and on.

I say all of this because I’m here to tell people that it all starts with an idea. I had an idea, then I received some encouragement and then I let the words flow. I’m excited where the story ended up and I’m excited to start sharing it with readers.
